1 October 2009 | FXB Launches Village in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
With programs already operating in 18 countries, FXB has recently expanded its services by launching a new FXB-Village in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) this October. FXB has successfully implemented Villages in six countries throughout the world (Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Thailand, India and China).
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, located in central Africa, is one of the largest countries on the continent and has a population of approximately 65 million people. Civil war and persistent spillover from conflicts in bordering countries have exacerbated an already dire situation for the Congalese people. One million people are currently living with HIV, and more than 70% live below the poverty line. Violence, disease, and hunger are widespread throughout much of the DRC, with an estimated 1,000 adults and children dying each day from these war-related causes. FXB’s Village in Goma, funded primarily by the King Baudouin Foundation, will address these issues by providing families with the stability and support necessary to begin rebuilding their lives. As with the other FXB-Villages, families will receive nutritional, emotional, and educational support, as well as health care and seed money to start a small business. The households have already been selected and the Village is currently underway!
